Kybella

Get ready to say goodbye to your double chin and hello to a tight, sculpted, defined jawline and chin from Kybella. One of the unfortunate effects of aging is that with time, the sharp contours of the lower face slowly are replaced with pockets of hard-to-get rid-of fat, especially under the chin.

When too much fat, which occurs from the natural aging process plus diet and genetics, takes up residence in the area below the chin, the jawline loses that angular look that everyone is chasing after these days.

Injectables

Before the advent of the fat-dissolving injectable Kybella, liposuction and surgery were the only options to reinstate a poorly defined chin-jawline neck area.

Although fat under the chin serves a purpose (it creates support and structure), too much of it can leave the jawline looking weak and lacking sharpness. For the most part, men desire a more masculine and square-looking jaw and chin, and women want a sharply chiseled one that represents the heart-shaped face.

Yet a few injections of Kybella can reduce the amount of fat under the chin and along the jawline to permanently destroy fat in these areas and reinstate a youthful and perfectly contoured jawline.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that destroys fat cells in the area under the chin to improve your profile.

Kybella is a prescription medicine to treat moderate to severe submental fat (fat below the chin), commonly known as a double chin. Submental fullness is harmless fat that tends to gather and accumulate under the chin. Kybella is a good treatment for adults of all ages.

Kybella is a non-surgical option that melts fat via multiple injections over a few months. No numbing cream is required. The entire injection process takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Since everyone has a different amount of fat under their chin, the number of sessions varies from patient to patient. Your practitioner will determine how many sessions are needed during your consultation. Each set of injections is one month apart. The maximum amount of treatments is six, although most patients are happy after three sessions.

How does it work?

The active ingredient in Kybella is a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally-occurring molecule in the body (a salt in human bile that helps with fat digestion) that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into an area, it permanently destroys fat cells, so those cells will no longer accumulate or store fat.

When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella destroys fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin. The fat cells dissolve and turn into what is known as cellular debris, which the lymphatic system naturally excretes over a few weeks.

To obtain the full results of the fat-dissolving power of Kybella, a series of treatments is necessary. During each injection session, about 20 injections are used under the chin.

A mild burning or stinging sensation occurs as soon as Kybella is injected under the chin. It can also feel as if the area is tightening up under pressure. This sensation indicates that Kybella is taking action, and the initial feeling will stop after about 15 minutes.

Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not usually necessary once you reach your desired aesthetic goal.

Treatment Areas

Kybella is FDA approved for use under the chin to treat submental fat. However, there are other off-label (non-FDA-approved areas) where Kybella injections are routinely administered to treat stubborn fatty pockets, including:

  • Fat on the bra line (between the bra and the armpit)
  • The knees
  • The jowls
  • The arms
  • Love handles and fat on the hips
  • The banana roll

Pinchable fat, pretty much anywhere on the body, responds to Kybella, even if it’s an off-label use.

Kybella Benefits

Kybella’s main benefit is to reduce fat under the chin and sculpt the jawline and chin for a more defined look.

This area is often difficult to lose weight because it’s hard to spot treat one isolated facial area. While a healthy diet and exercise can help improve fatty pockets under the chin, Kybella is a better solution for long-term improvement.

Because it targets hard-to-treat fatty areas, Kybella is an excellent alternative to surgical options, like liposuction, without downtime, the expense, and recovery. The treatment is non-invasive, and there are no cutting or sutures required. It’s also a fast and easy procedure that provides dramatic results.

Once the extra fat is eliminated, there’s a more precise delineation between the chin, neck, chin, and jawline, making the lower face appear sharper and younger-looking.

How Much Do Kybella Injections Cost?

Kybella varies in cost from provider to provider, and those in large cities often charge more.

However, on average, one session of Kybella starts at $900.

Common FAQs

The most common side effects of Kybella are minor short-term pain, numbness, swelling, redness, bruising, and hardness at the injection site. These symptoms resolve on their own once the healing process is initiated.

Most patients don't experience any significant risks with Kybella. However, there are some to be aware of, including:

  • Nerve injury in the jaw (which can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness)
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Injection site problems like bruising, hair loss, open sores (ulcers), damage, and tissue cell-death (necrosis) around the injection site.

The effects of Kybella are permanent. Once Kybella destroys the fat cells under the chin, the cells cannot regenerate or regrow. Therefore, the area can no longer store or accumulate fat.

The ideal Kybella candidate is someone with a fair amount of submental fat. When the fat is more genetic than weight-related, Kyeblla tends to give a better effect, although it works for both causes.

Skin tone also influences the result. Those with younger, more elastic skin that snaps back into place typically have less sagging and excess skin. Removing fat from under the chin can cause already loose skin to appear even looser.

Immediately following a Kybella treatment, there will be some swelling, bruising, and numbness under your chin. It's also normal for the area to puff up and lose any definition for the short term as the injectable fat-fighting abilities go to work. The swelling, which is an indication that Kybella is working, is often the worst at the 24-hour mark and can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. However, with each following treatment, the swelling, numbness, and bruising will become less and less since there is subsequently less fat to treat.
